JD DeHart- Three Poems

Able Not

strong arms
that formed the universe
eternal finger

somehow made small
a fragment, flicker
glimpse of the divine

able not to sin
and yet able to save.

Overcome

I used to think I would
be overcome with
a brand-new vision,

the voice of God speaking
out of my mouth,
a kind of tender megaphone

now I know the balance
is much better, a synthesis
of relationship and love.

Likeness

made in His image
we travel
and attempt small
kindnesses in spite
of ourselves

we attempt to reach
for heaven in each
moment, finding tiny
graces for our faults.
